How to properly store knitted clothes and wool
There is a high risk that clothes moths will infest the clothes or that favorite items will become distorted on the hangers.
What can be done about clothes moths?
The question most people will ask is, of course, how best to prevent clothes moths from eating away at the wool.
Here are a few tips we've compiled:
1. Regular cleaning:
Keep your clothes and textiles clean. Moths are more attracted to dirty garments. Therefore, wash or dry clean clothes before storing them for extended periods.
2. Storage in airtight containers:
Store seasonal clothing and balls of yarn that you don't wear or need in airtight containers. This prevents moths from getting into your clothes.
3. Use mothproofing products:
You can use moth repellents in the form of moth spray or mothballs. Make sure you use them according to the instructions on the product and that the clothing is well aired before wearing it to remove the odor.
4. Natural Repellents:
Some natural repellents, such as lavender, cedarwood, or cloves, can help keep moths away. You can place lavender sachets or cedarwood blocks in your wardrobe.
5. Vacuuming and cleaning:
Vacuum and regularly clean cupboards, drawers, and clothing storage areas. Moth eggs and larvae like to hide in dark, dusty corners.
6. Temperature control:
Moths prefer warmer temperatures. If possible, store clothes at cooler temperatures, as this can slow down the development of moth larvae.
7. Check clothing before storing it:
Before packing clothes for storage, carefully check them for signs of moth infestation. If you find damaged clothing, wash it thoroughly or remove it to prevent further infestation.
8. Natural enemies:
You can consider using natural enemies of clothes moths, such as parasitic wasps. These tiny insects lay their eggs inside moth eggs, which reduces the moth population.
Proper storage of knitted clothes:
We now know how to protect ourselves from moths, but how do we keep our favorite knitted items in shape?
1. Keep clean and dry:
Before storing knitwear, make sure it is clean and dry. Dirt or stains can become embedded over time and be difficult to remove. If there is any sweat or perfume residue on the garments, wash them thoroughly before storing.

2. Fold instead of hanging:
Knitwear should generally be folded, not hung, as the weight of the garment can sag on the shoulders and cause the fibers to stretch. Use clean, dry drawers or shelves to store knitwear.
3. Avoid direct sunlight:
Store your knitwear in a place where it is protected from direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause colors to fade and weaken the fibers.
4. Seal airtight:
When storing knitwear in drawers, boxes, or storage containers, make sure they are airtight to keep out dust and insects. You can also add silica gel packs or lavender sachets to help control humidity and reduce odors.
5. Avoid hanging hooks:
If you really want to hang clothes, use padded or fabric-covered hangers to prevent pressure marks and deformation. However, don't hang knitwear for too long, as this can affect its shape.
6. Use intermediate layers:
If you store several knitted garments on top of each other in a drawer, place a layer of tissue paper or fabric between each piece to minimize friction and pilling.
7. Rotation:
Rotate your knitwear, especially seasonal pieces, regularly. This ensures that no items are stored for too long and develop creases or distortions.
