I am Nadine, 31 years old and an absolute knitting beginner.

The beginning of my knitting adventure

In March 2024, I discovered OONIQUE and promptly ordered the New Beginnings hat knitting kit . And what can I say – I had so much fun! I used every free minute for my new hobby, including my train journeys. This is what my beginning looked like:

My first project: The hat

Knitting the hat was super quick. With the detailed instructions and the help of the video tutorial, I managed to knit the hat – even without any prior knitting experience!
It was such a wonderful feeling to hold my first knitting project in my hands.

The next step: The New Beginnings Cardigan

I immediately chose the next beginner set, the New Beginnings Cardigan . The cardigan was a bit more challenging to knit due to its size, but still super easy!

I noticed a few minor knitting errors afterwards. This briefly frustrated my inner perfectionist. But the cardigan is handmade, and that's okay if it shows in a few small imperfections!

Overall, nobody notices these little flaws except me. And look how great the cardigan looks on!
It took me a month to make the cardigan, which I think is really fast for a beginner. ☺

My first test knitting project

When a call for test knitters for a vegan top was launched in May 2024, I immediately responded – and was fortunately selected!

The challenge for carriers

The main part of the top was very easy and a lot of fun. When something works well, it's so much more enjoyable. The straps, on the other hand, drove me absolutely crazy. I kept getting tangled up in them, which is why they ended up uneven.

Here I turned to the lovely Consuelo with my problems and received a lot of support and really helpful tips from her and the entire knitting community !

Back to knitting in autumn

Because I had a lot on my plate personally, I was forced to take an extended break from knitting. But now that autumn is just around the corner, my need for a quiet, meaningful, and sustainable activity has returned.

Finish the top

I still had in the back of my mind that there was a project waiting for me that needed to be finished. No sooner said than done – I sat down again to knit the straps of the top and, with the help of the video, finished both straps within two days.

Looking back, I honestly can't say what caused me so much trouble. I'm incredibly happy that I've finally finished the project and couldn't be happier. It looks beautiful, and it's such a satisfying feeling to hold a handmade garment in my hands, with all the hard work, sweat, and joy that went into it.

Knitting fever

And once again gripped by the knitting bug, I promptly ordered a new New Beginnings kit. This time it was the sweater, and what can I say: I'm enjoying it so much that I'm almost finished with it already – and all within two weeks!

Since I learned a new technique here, the technique of increases, I now know where my mistake was with the straps of the top: I accidentally kept adding increases. New techniques are taught in every New Beginning set, which is why I would even say that I'm no longer a complete beginner.

What's more, it's slow fashion, so we're not only doing something good for ourselves, but also for the environment!

Why knitting is the perfect way for me to unwind

Knitting has become a way for me to unwind from my daily work as a social worker. After work, I relax on the sofa or, in summer, on the balcony, grabbing my knitting needles and enjoying some time to myself. The peace and relaxation I associate with it is exactly what I need after a long day at work.

The feeling of holding your finished, hand-knitted item in your hands is indescribably beautiful – you have to experience it for yourself!
